Tamper evident labels

Tamper evident labels are made from specialised materials and adhesives that tear, fragment or leave behind a recognisable pattern upon removal. As a result, they cannot be reused.

Our polyester checkerboard material (M1183) features a permanent adhesive layer with an integrated transparent checkerboard pattern. The label can be removed in one piece, but part of the patterned adhesive remains on the surface as proof of tampering.

Other materials, such as our destructive vinyl (M1423) and paper (M2002), work differently. These particular label materials use a strong permanent adhesive. When removal is attempted, the facestock tears or disintegrates completely, making any tampering instantly apparent.

Tamper evident labels are most commonly used in industries where security, traceability and authenticity are critical.

• Pharmaceutical industry: used to guarantee the authenticity of medicines and prevent counterfeiting or repackaging
• Electronics industry: applied for warranty purposes and to detect and prevent fraud involving returns and counterfeit products
• Logistics and distribution: used as sealing labels for parcels and shipments
• Retail (FMCG): manufacturers of luxury goods such as perfumes, cosmetics and jewellery rely on tamper evident labels to prove authenticity and protect against imitation

The right material choice for tamper proof labels depends on the application and the surface to which the labels will be applied.

Checkerboard

• Suitable for product and asset tracking
• Limited surface damage
• Common uses: consumer electronics, inspection labels and asset identification

Destructible

• Maximum protection for high-risk applications
• Breaks apart upon removal and may affect the surface
• Common uses: warranty seals, medical devices and electronic components

Resistance to extreme conditions depends on the selected label material. Destructible vinyl labels (M1423) provide strong UV and chemical resistance with an outdoor lifespan of 3–5 years.

Paper labels (M2002), however, are not recommended for outdoor use in harsh environments or high temperatures.

For applications that require the labels to be heat resistant, we recommend M1183 checkerboard polyester. This type of material can withstand short-term exposure up to +150 °C. Please note that prolonged exposure above +80 °C may reduce its tamper evident properties.
